Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is a Roman Catholic Elementary School dedicated to building a school community in which students can thrive socially, spiritually, and academically. Our Lady of Mount Carmel offers students a comprehensive curriculum emphasizing reading, writing, math, spelling, science, and social studies while celebrating religious traditions and integrating faith throughout all subjects and activites.
Students grade K-8 develop intellectual skills, learn to think critically, and are prepared to make vital contributions to their communities. Partnered with The Society of St. Vincent DePaul and other local organizations, students are also involved in multiple volunteer and service activities throughout the year through the Works of Mercy campaign.
Created with children in mind
Established in 1945, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School was opened with 80 students grades one through five. Four years later, the school expanded to include grades six through eight after taking on an adjacent adobe house. A four-classroom school was built in 1951 and, in 1954, the school land was bought by Arizona State University for expansion.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel School relocated to its current site when a family donated 10 acres of land to allow the school to continue to teach its students. The school relocation included the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and the convent. Since the relocation, the school has expanded to include new facilities and accommodations, including a campus renovation and new buildings in the summer of 2019.
Helping students thrive today
Today, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel School serves 400 students in 19 classrooms. Classes are kept relatively small with 18 to 20 students per class to ensure each student receives the education and attention they need to academically succeed. The school continues to maximize its resources to reflect on its humble beginnings, keep tuition low, and to serve as many students as possible.
Led by principal Dr. Kelly Shewbridge, Our Lady of Mount Carmel provides a nurturing and dynamic environment promoting student growth with its nationally recognized Accelerated Reading program, challenging curriculum, extracurricular activities, and inclusive sports teams.
